Lyrics

Love and Justice

America, we’re holding on
To bits of patriotic songs
And all those stories, once believed
Of love and justice
Spread from sea to shining sea

America, we’ve all been shamed
By hateful deeds done in your name
And so we stand and we become
The love and justice
That turn many into one

We stand for love and justice
We are the miracle we need
We stand for love and justice
From everyplace, we shed our grace
On thee, America

America, we sing your song
Despite so much that’s gone so wrong
There’s still a chance if we believe
And stand together
Joined from sea to shining sea

We stand for love and justice
We are the miracle we need
We stand for love and justice
From everyplace, we shed our grace
On thee, America

America, we sing your song
Despite so much that’s gone so wrong
There’s still a chance if we believe
And stand together
Joined from sea to shining sea

We stand for love and justice
We are the miracle we need
We stand for love and justice
From everyplace, we shed our grace
On thee, America

Love & Justice is a love song to a broken country. I wrote it for a public performance at which a well-meaning group of justice-loving activists hoped to speak out against the ideology of a well-funded tea-party rally being held just down the street. I wrote this song so that when it was my turn to approach the podium at the rally, I could sing with utter conviction. And I did. This recording, with the rich choral and scat singing, expresses the song far better than I could sing it alone.

The words and melody were written Juliane Poirier with arrangement by Jeff Powel. Jeff plays acoustic guitar, bass and percussion with vocal contributions by William Limbach and Chris Rininger to the arrangement as well as back up vocals by Ray Burns & Jeff Powel.
