Lyrics

Come Marching Home

No soldier goes fighting alone
No tomb holds a soul that’s unknown

And this great love we share
Makes us yearn in our bones
To see Johnny come marching home

No daughter, no son falls alone
No tomb holds a soul that’s unknown

And God bless the ones
Who would trade all they own
To see one soldier come marching home

No soldier goes fighting alone
No tomb holds a soul that’s unknown

And this great love we share
Makes us yearn in our bones
To see Johnny come marching home

No daughter, no son falls alone
No tomb holds a soul that’s unknown

And God bless the ones
Who would trade all they own
To see one soldier come marching home

Come Marching Home One day I got a call from the California Veteran’s Home in Yountville, asking me to sing “something appropriate” at the Memorial Day services for veterans and families of veterans. I was told the ceremony included placing a wreath on the grave of the Unknown Soldier. I got to thinking that in truth there is no such thing as an unknown soldier. So I wrote this song.
