Lyrics

Violin

I was only passing by
I heard a violin
A sound so sweet and circling
A music without end

I could not go my way
I stood there listening to him
I was haunted by that violin

I was not expecting
To be taken by a tune
Coming through the window
From inside a stranger’s room
I could see his face
I couldn’t ask him for his name
But I stood there and let myself
Be taken all the same

All of my life
I have listened for a tune
I heard him play it then

What words cannot say for me
Memory plays for me
On a violin

I was not expecting
To be taken by a tune
Coming through the window
From inside a stranger’s room

I could see his face
I couldn’t ask him for his name
But I stood there and let myself
Be taken all the same

All of my life
I have listened for a tune
I heard him play it then

What words cannot say for me
Memory plays for me
On a violin

I was only passing by
I heard a violin
A sound so sweet and circling
A music without end

I could not go my way
I stood there listening to him

I was haunted by that violin
I was haunted by that violin

Violin came from emotionally powerful experiences involving violin players: first, an unforgettable solo by a concert musician; and years later, an unforgettable romance with a brilliant violinist. Both experiences touched me deeply, though the song is about something for which the violin is only a symbol. I’m really singing about inspiration, expressed as music so pure it’s haunting.
