Lyrics

Crazy I'm Not
Ray Burns & Jeffrey Powel

I woke up/ From a nine hour outing
To hell and back/ But nobody told me
The things that happened/ When my eyes were closed
I’m keeping it secret so nobody knows

I’m just a tool/ of some  government agent
Sending warnings to me/ and hiding in my basement
Those people talking to me. / Can’t you hear what they say?
They’re making me crazy. Why can’t I drive them away?

They warn me and guide me / They keep me awake
I’m edgin’ close to the limit/ and I’m ready to break.
You think they’re not real./ That they’re just in my head.
I’m not crazy cuz/ I heard what they said.

Chorus:
Crazy I’m not; they’re coming for me. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
They’ll bust down my door and jump from the trees. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
Brandishing guns, badges, nightsticks and keys (I’m not crazy, crazy)
They’ll seize me and beat. Leave me on my knees.

Solo

I know they’re all thinking/ of doing dirty things to me
I see it and feel their touch, / pawing all over me
I can see in their mind;/  I can see their lust grow.
I can see them touching me and they think I don’t know.

Bridge
I keep hearing these voices (I hear ‘em talking, talking)
Women, children, and men./
What are they saying, really? (You’re crazy, crazy)
They’re not makin’ sense.
You think they’re not real.  (I hear ‘em talking, talking)
That they’re just in my head.
I’m not crazy. Cuz I heard what they said.

Chorus

You say take one of these pills/ But they just cloud my head.
Slows everything down. / And fills me with dread.
The voices still whisper a warning to me
This torment inside/ will never let me be.

Bridge
Crazy I’m not; they’re coming for me. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
They’ll bust down my door and jump from the trees. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
Crazy I’m not; they’re coming for me. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
They’ll bust down my door and jump from the trees. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
Crazy I’m not; they’re coming for me. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
They’ll bust down my door and jump from the trees. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
Crazy I’m not; they’re coming for me. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
They’ll bust down my door and jump from the trees. (I’m not crazy, crazy)
(I’m not crazy, crazy) (I’m not crazy, crazy,  crazy, crazy, crazy, crazy)

This song focuses on someone who exhibits symtoms of extreme emotional distress, but seems to lack insight into the extent of the disturbance. It is reasonable to say we all know or know of someone who suffers from an untreated mental health condition but sometimes that disturbance can be frightening both for the sufferer and those who care for them. In this song, I am writing about the experience of spending time with someone very close to me who showed symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. The most perplexing part of this experience was the helplessness I felt when trying to diminish this person's pain. My challenge was to find a safe space for someone who's apparent delusions kept a feeling of safety as remote and inaccessible as was the source of the delusions to me. The treatment that was available was viewed with distrust and the side effects to that treatment were aversive in their own right. In the end we do what we can to understand and hope that sometimes, by understanding, we can help a little. I took from this experience that to know someone who suffers, we don't stop caring about them, even when the effort we make is so much less than we'd prefer.
