Lyrics

Stay Away
Steve Thomas & Rod Lewis

On a rainy day you call
And wonder what I’m doing
After all I know you’d fall
Now you say that you’re through it
Many are the warnings
And all the tell-tale signs
You’d think it’d be so easy
Well you’ll find I’ve changed my mind
Not this time
I’ve changed my mind

You want me to come back to you
I get it every day
You say this time that’s its for good
This time you say you’ll stay
But now you can walk out some other door
Cause this time I think I’ll stay away
This time I think I’ll stay away

Of all the times I’ve spent alone
Time now in the past
Of all the ones I have loved
You’re name comes up last
I wonder if you even realize
Why you do what you do
You’ve hurt me one too many times
Now girl I’m through with you
I’m through with you
I’m through with you

You want me to come back to you
I get it every day
You say this time that’s its for good
This time you say you’ll stay
But now you can walk out some other door
Cause this time I think I’ll stay away
This time I think I’ll stay away

Long time friends Steve Thomas and Rod Lewis wrote Stay Away several years ago when it was just the two of them getting together on occasion to while away the hours jamming and playing. At the time neither knew many cover songs all the way through so they tried their hand at writing a few songs, most of which fell short of being something worth repeating. Stay Away, though, seemed to have had some staying power so Steve brought it to the DeComposer’s for their consideration. This song was one of the very first to be recorded. It has acoustic elements, electric elements, and vocal harmonies. The group played it for several months before even trying to record it, because of their inexperience with the studio. Steve taught Jeff the lick that is the primary "hook" for the song. Jeff then added some noodles and parallel harmonies throughout the song. Steve played acoustic guitar and laid down the midi bass line. Jeff and Steve both worked and re-worked the drum track. While Steve and Chris Rininger each sang a lead vocal track, Chris’ vocal was just simply the best.

Taken as a whole, the song itself is not based on the real life experiences of any individual, but a few lines were written with particular people in mind from our respective pasts. So for all those ex's out there who done us wrong, and you know who you are, You finally have a song written about you :-).
