Steve has over 40 years of experience acquiring the skills of a musician. He started  his musical training at age 8 when he began piano lessons.  In Junior High he began learning trombone and was the 1st chair trombonist during his final two years of high school.  He also began playing guitar during his senior year of high school.  Over the past several years his interest has also included learning and playing bass guitar.  Always interested in percussion instrumentation, he sometimes drives his family and friends crazy with his constant finger tapping.  Just recently he purchased his first set of drums and has begun pursuing his dream of learning to keep a beat using both his feet and hands.

Steve responded to an ad on Craig's List inviting him to join "geezer" guitarist Jeff Powel to sing tunes of our age. Chris Rininger, and Ray Burns also joined in the fray and we set about playing covers and Ray's orginal tunes in the basement of Jeff's "man-cave." The group was temporarily named Ray and The Burn Pile since we did so many of Ray Burn's songs. But when it turned out that each of us had songs to add, Jeff pushed for a name change and the group morphed into the DeComposers. Steve introduced Jeff to DireStraits "On the Waterline," and together they beat the heck out of Sultan's of Swing and then Allman Brothers' Jessica and Travelin Man. As the backbone of the group, Steve's attention to musical detail helped bring these covers about as close to the originals as one might possibly bring them. When Jeff Introduced the notion of recording into the mix, Steve had two songs already to go but left for a tour of Europe before they could be completed. There he dined on the brautworsts of Germany, sample local brews, and upon his return reunitied with his friends Rod Lewis and Charlie Houchins. With this group Steve plays guitar, keys, bass, and drums.  The one talent he wishes he possessed is singing, although he does enjoy trying.  You can hear his vocal debut in the song “Long Hard Nights”, which tells the tale of an aspiring musician confronting the realities of life on the road.  As a multi-instrumentalist Steve contributes in many ways on the recordings of Dogfish Bay Studios.
